Long Description

Purple Sheep Productions’ mission is to propel brands forward with the power of video.
Run by the husband and wife team of Kerrin and Genevieve Revell, who have been producing creative, high-end, attention-grabbing videos, adverts and documentaries since 2005. They enjoy telling relaxed, human-interest stories that engage and entertain people.
Purple Sheep Productions is all about standing out from the crowd, which is reflected in their company logo and name. They are based in Auckland but their work has taken them all around the country. No more so than in 2007 and 2008 when Genevieve and Kerrin circumnavigated New Zealand on Horseback for the ‘Down, Across & Up’ documentary.
That adventurous spirit continues in their work to this day. You can often find Genevieve or Kerrin hanging off the side of a boat, lying in mud or in tall grass up their necks, striving just to get that perfect shot.

Company History

Most production companies start with small productions, like an advert or company video, something that is easy to make as they build up their reputations and portfolios. What they don’t do is spend an entire year filming a feature-length documentary, while riding horses twenty to thirty kilometres every day.
That, however, was exactly what we did. So in 2005 we founded Purple Sheep Productions and began planning our year-long horse trek that we hoped would become a documentary.
This was going to be an epic undertaking, so we tried all of the main funding authorities to help fund the filming of the documentary. Despite meeting all of their requirements, every single one declined our applications, stating that “this is not how beginners start out”.
Upset, but undeterred by those rejections we decided (much to the shock and horror of others) to quit our jobs at a large TV Station, sell our house and fund it ourselves.
We then needed funding for the trek side of things, so we approached many companies for sponsorship. At first, we only managed to convince one sponsor (who only gave us a five percent chance of actually achieving our goal). With the start date looming we were cutting it fine but we managed to get some big companies to back us, just in the nick of time.
Of course, we did achieve our goal and the result was the documentary (and book) called ‘Down, Across & Up’.
Once that was all done, we had the small problem of having no jobs and no house. Determined to keep Purple Sheep alive, we went about finding clients who needed adverts and videos. Since then we have made many adverts and videos and more documentaries (some which have aired on prime time) and continue to do so today (as well as having a place to live).

FAQ

Our technology and the fact that we are great multitaskers allows us to have a small crew, which keeps the costs down. It is usually just a crew of two. We do it all - camera and drone, scriptwriting, lighting, editing, directing etc, etc. Our prices are very competitive, I mean we aren’t making Hollywood movies… unless you have the budget for that!
You do. We like to show off our work on our website and on YouTube but we will always seek your approval first.
Yes, yes we do. We also offer free quotes.
All video/film productions are broken down into three parts.
  1. Pre-production. This is when we work with you to create and finalise all the ideas and come up with a plan.
  2. Production (filming). This is the fun part where we film everything.
  3. Post-production. This is where we edit up your amazing video and finalise it before you release it upon the unsuspecting public.
You can be involved as little or as much as you like. We love working with our customers as a team to get the best video possible.
We can film on location at your premises, somewhere in public or in our studio.
We try our best to be as less disruptive as possible. There might be times when we have to interrupt somebody working for a few minutes but that is rare. At most, your employees will see these Steven Spielberg wannabes (although, much more attractive) filming and setting up equipment in seemingly random places.
Quality and experience, sorry Bob. We are qualified and have all the professional equipment to ensure you get the best possible product.
We require a minimum of 4 weeks for production, from the time of receiving the creative brief until delivery.
Your videos and photos will be sent to you digitally via a secure link.
Yes, both throughout New Zealand and internationally.
Because we were already using purple for our sheep.
We follow all the safety protocols when we film and that includes all the safety requirements on your premises (if that is where we are filming). We also ensure we follow all of the guidelines around Covid.
Yes! We can produce a video using a mix of your existing brand assets, logos, video and still images and our motion graphics and stock imagery. You don’t even have to get out of your chair… although keeping active is important.
That’s not a problem, we regularly hire actors who love nothing more than to be in front of the camera.
It's normal to feel nervous. We encounter this a lot and we have developed techniques over the years to relax people who are worried about being on camera.
It sure is. We can add movement and effects to make the photos come to life.
Of course. We love hearing about people’s creative ideas. Please note however that this doesn’t necessarily mean we will produce it for you. We love producing documentaries and several of our previous documentary series have aired in prime time.
Not at this point sorry. We do use contractors/freelancers from time to time though.
Because, like our videos, we like to stand out from the crowd.

Management/Staff Bios

Genevieve Revell

I have always been interested in the visual arts and that led me to Film School where I received a diploma in Digital Video Production with distinction. I have over 15 years experience in the television and photography industries. I have worked at TV3 and TVNZ on award-winning news, sports and current affairs shows. The highlight of my career so far was a documentary my husband and I produced called ‘Down, Across & Up’ circumnavigating New Zealand on horses for the charity, CanTeen. I also love to paint quirky pop art when I’m not running around with a camera in my hand. My skills include producing, directing, camera, photography, motion graphics, voice overs, editing, plus I love snapping the clapperboard and yelling “Action!”
